Proposal: Fund an engineering study that clears the way for completion of an educational F.M. radio station to open in September, 2001. (Well that didn't happen, but it was a good idea !)
Background: The Souhegan Valley lacks any radio broadcast facility that originates local programming. The FCC has reserved 20 slots (88.1 to 91.9 mhz) on the F.M. dial for educational purposes. Educational institutions are allowed to apply at no cost for the privilege of broadcasting within this frequency range. Obviously this creates a large demand for a limited resource.
Process: 1. Determine if a slot is available - requires a broadcast engineer. $3000 maximum required.
2. Apply for any available slot - handled by the engineer. $2000 required upon completion of successful survey.
3. Await FCC action (6 months is average). No charge.
4. Upon approval begin construction (18 months maximum). $25,000 (less donations) over two school years.
Action Required: The Milford School Board discussed the $3000 allocation at their meeting on Monday, May 18, 1998 and postponed the issue indefinately. Following that decision, a small group of citizens meet weekly for a number of months to seek outside funding and move the issue forward. The group has recieved coverage from the Nashua Telegraph and the Milford Area Chamber of Commerce Newsletter. We had hoped to arrange presentations to various public service organizations in the area. Your interest and input would be welcome.
